Dear UTech, Jamaica,  Alumni Communitiy & Friends,

With your help our recent LUCI LIGHT FUNDRAISER, JULY 2016 was a success! Thanks to you, 95+ persons offered support. TOGETHER we exceeded our minimum sales goal of 100 lights and sold 144 Luci Lights + attracted open donations from persons who didn’t want lights, but wished to support UTech, Jamaica! Contribution $1700.

Our purpose for our fundraiser is to support the University’s Student Welfare Fund, as well as Student Engagement & Alumni Engagement activities.

“It makes a good night light on the lower setting and it does give good illumination on the bright setting.” Jody-Ann Finakin, SCIT Alumna

In July, we partnered with a retailer of the lights, and we received a commission. For August, 2016 we hope to purchase lights and retail them ourselves as this would be more advantageous to our University.

Luci Light Model Available from Alumni Relations Office, UTech, Jamaica

WHY ARE WE FUNDRAISING?

The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech, Jamaica) continues to facilitate national and regional development in the context of a weak Jamaican economy; the ongoing reduction in the government’s subvention to the tertiary sector; and the resulting reduction in student enrolment and income from tuition. Consequently, the Alumni Relations Office (ARO) is fundraising to support the ongoing development of our UTech, Jamaica by increasing our financial capacity to:

  • Support the Personal, Professional and Business Development of our alumni through the provision of relevant, good and services, inclusive of value adding content, through workshops, networking events, and social events
  • Support the Student Welfare Fund established to offset the tuition, meals, boarding, transportation, and book expenses of financially challenged students
  • Sponsor student events and promote a culture of investment in the University and its student body, within the mindset of our student population, prior to their graduation
  • Appropriately resource the ARO in order to improve its human resource and administrative capacity to provide excellent customer service to its Alumni and student customers. A major need is to know our Alumni well, in order to support them in their professional, business and community pursuits, with the support of an appropriate Alumni Database. An Alumni Database would host complete contact records of our Alumni, noting relevant details of their student life through to their employment status, current professional, business and community interests and achievements.

The Luci Light Fundraiser is one of several fundraising initiatives to be facilitated by the Alumni Relations Office over time in support of UTech, Jamaica

Dear Sir/ Madam:

Re: Sponsorship for UTech, Jamaica Summer Programme

The University of Technology, Jamaica through its Centre for the Arts is embarking on a summer programme for children titled “Digital Technology meets Culture”; Bringing Arts and Technology Together.”

The programme will run from July 4 –July 29 and is a direct response to the changing landscape of Jamaica. As such we have partnered with ThinkJamaica.net to introduce to the children digital skill sets so that we can build a more productive and entrepreneurial cohort of young people.

A cohort of 30 -60, children ages 6-14 yrs will be given an opportunity to express themselves using digital technology. The students will be exposed to training in video game creation, mobile application development, 2D animation art as well as theatre arts.

The long-term goal is have this program developed into a short course, which would be offered at the Centre for the Arts to the general public. The program will provide participants with a lucrative skillset and an opportunity to become trainers as ThinkJamaica will roll out this program to select primary and secondary schools island wide for the academic year 2016/17.

This sponsorship opportunity will create a valuable presence for your organization as your involvement will catalyze the bridging of Jamaica’s digital divide, help refine our education system and empower the future of our young people through relevant job creation.

We would be honoured if you would partner with the Centre for the Arts on this initiative as a sponsor of this summer programme. ThinkJamaica.net has already committed over 500,000 JMD in Computer Hardware and Software to the summer program, however, we have other associated costs that are critical to the programmes success.

We are seeking an additional, Three Thousand Three hundred dollars (US$3,300.00) to offset these associated costs in order to help this project reach to the youth of the surrounding areas in Papine, August Town and Mona who would not normally be able to afford the program.

We look forward to your favourable response to our invitation to partner with us on this summer enrichment programme in arts and technology for the benefit of our children. I may be contacted by email at culture@utech.edu.jm  or telephone 876- 322-3181/970-5019.

Your respectfully,

Philip Clarke

THE ALUMNI RELATIONS OFFICE

NEEDS YOUR HELP WITH MARKET RESEARCH FOR A PROPOSED FUNDRAISER

Why Are We Fundraising?

The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech, Jamaica) continues to facilitate national and regional development in the context of a weak Jamaican economy; the ongoing reduction in the government’s subvention to the tertiary education sector; and the resulting reduction in student enrolment and income from tuition.

  • Sponsor student events and promote a culture of ongoing investment in the University and its student body, within the mindset of our student population, prior to their graduation
  • Appropriately resource the ARO in order to improve its human resource and administrative capacity to provide excellent customer service to its Alumni and student customers. A major need is to know our Alumni well, in order to support them in their professional, business and community pursuits, with the support of an appropriate Alumni Database. Dear Alumni,

In keeping with our commitment to sharing content that will support your Personal, Professional, Academic and Business Development Goals, we share 10 simple reasons why we believe you should be ACTIVE on LinkedIn.

  1. It is the premiere social media networking site for professionals, entrepreneurs and students who have personal, professional, academic and business development goals
  2. Your actions and engagement on LinkedIn have a potential reach of 400 + million users, located in 200+ countries, with 70 % of the users living outside of the USA. This is good for persons with international interests.
  3. It has a powerful search engine which enables you to be highly selective in generating search results for the unique set of characteristics of the professionals and organizations you most wish to connect with
  4. Its profile feature enables you to thoroughly research your target professional or organization, enabling you to be be fully prepared and confident when you make contact for academic, business or job hunting purposes
  5. Through the Group option, you can improve your networking results, keep abreast of cutting edge trends in your industry, and learn new information and skills about areas of interest well beyond your current professional role
  6. It provides you unfettered access to the intellectual capital of world leaders and industry leaders and influencers
  7. It provides you with a platform to showcase samples of your work, and share your intellectual capital, thereby allowing you to be seen as an expert in your profession. This in turn increases the likelihood of your success in job hunting, as well as being offered career, academic and business opportunities by other professionals located across the world
  8. It has dedicated online learning, sales, and recruitment options
  9. It provides highly useful and value -adding functionality with its free option, which you can further enhance with a paid subscription
  10. Based on current business and lifestyle trends, and the influence of the internet on daily life, increasingly, if you do not have a professional online presence, through which interested parties e.g. Prospective Employers, Scholarship Donors, Venture Capitalists, Prospective Business Partners can research you, this will be seen as a ‘red flag.‘  Not having a well crafted, professional, online presence will make you un-competitive as a professional and entrepreneur who needs a thriving network in order to accomplish significant goals. With the growing dominance of LinkedIn in the professional, business and academic space, it is the first online context that anyone wishing to research you will visit.

Have we convinced you that if you are a career conscious professional or serious entrepreneur that you need to be ACTIVE on LinkedIn?
