Dear CAST – UTech, Ja Alumni,

If you don’t mind, please take a few quick minutes to share your latest contact details with us. Our current database is comprised of exports from our University’s student database, done annually in your graduation year. This means with our mobile and global lives, the information we have on you would have changed quite a bit since our University first captured it, in your first year with us.

Our current alumni email database is also very simple, yet functional, in enabling us to share updates with you. However, it does not give us a comprehensive view of you beyond your name and email.

While we hope one day to be able to afford to have a robust alumni database, as this would enable us to properly capture both your history with us, and also  who you have become today as professionals & retirees, we think this simple and ongoing Alumni Contact Update Exercise is a good middle ground. So we hope you will agree and choose to participate.

As you may know, since 2014, we have been gently reaching out and inviting alumni to share their contact details with us. Over 300 CAST-UTech, Ja Alumni located worldwide have happily responded since then. However, over 60,000 alumni have graduated from our noble institution to date. We don’t want to miss out on connecting with you as well.

So please CLICK the link below to share your most current information with us. Of course, if you would take a moment to also share this blog link with your Alumni colleagues, we’d greatly appreciate that as well. Always happy to connect with a graduate of CAST – UTech, Jamaica!

Yes, I Want to Stay in Touch With UTech, Jamaica!

Thanks for your continued support of UTech, Jamaica.

We Appreciate You!

Who feel lonely, confused, completely overwhelmed

Who are at a crossroads, needing to make a critical do-or-die decisions but don’t have the experience or information needed, or the confidence to just-make-the-decision and move on with life powerfully

Who need someone that they know for sure is in their corner. Someone who has time for them…to listen, to understand, to encourage…to give them room to explore and fail without judgment, as well as to celebrate with them when they get it right

Who need someone to provide a safe space to work through the challenging life experiences, and be better, stronger, and wiser for it.

And our students at UTech, especially our final year students, need someone wise to the world, and to the workplace, to listen, to understand, to gently guide and to celebrate with them, as they take their final steps as students and transition into the uncertainties of:  job search; the workplace; re-paying student loans; establishing a meaningful career and creating a future they can pursue with hope and passion.

Luci Light Model Available from Alumni Relations Office, UTech, Jamaica

WHY ARE WE FUNDRAISING?

The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech, Jamaica) continues to facilitate national and regional development in the context of a weak Jamaican economy; the ongoing reduction in the government’s subvention to the tertiary sector; and the resulting reduction in student enrolment and income from tuition. Consequently, the Alumni Relations Office (ARO) is fundraising to support the ongoing development of our UTech, Jamaica by increasing our financial capacity to:

  • Support the Personal, Professional and Business Development of our alumni through the provision of relevant, good and services, inclusive of value adding content, through workshops, networking events, and social events
  • Support the Student Welfare Fund established to offset the tuition, meals, boarding, transportation, and book expenses of financially challenged students
  • Sponsor student events and promote a culture of investment in the University and its student body, within the mindset of our student population, prior to their graduation
  • Appropriately resource the ARO in order to improve its human resource and administrative capacity to provide excellent customer service to its Alumni and student customers. A major need is to know our Alumni well, in order to support them in their professional, business and community pursuits, with the support of an appropriate Alumni Database. An Alumni Database would host complete contact records of our Alumni, noting relevant details of their student life through to their employment status, current professional, business and community interests and achievements.

The Luci Light Fundraiser is one of several fundraising initiatives to be facilitated by the Alumni Relations Office over time in support of UTech, Jamaica

Dear Alumni,

In keeping with our commitment to sharing content that will support your Personal, Professional, Academic and Business Development Goals, we share 10 simple reasons why we believe you should be ACTIVE on LinkedIn.

  1. It is the premiere social media networking site for professionals, entrepreneurs and students who have personal, professional, academic and business development goals
  2. Your actions and engagement on LinkedIn have a potential reach of 400 + million users, located in 200+ countries, with 70 % of the users living outside of the USA. This is good for persons with international interests.
  3. It has a powerful search engine which enables you to be highly selective in generating search results for the unique set of characteristics of the professionals and organizations you most wish to connect with
  4. Its profile feature enables you to thoroughly research your target professional or organization, enabling you to be be fully prepared and confident when you make contact for academic, business or job hunting purposes
  5. Through the Group option, you can improve your networking results, keep abreast of cutting edge trends in your industry, and learn new information and skills about areas of interest well beyond your current professional role
  6. It provides you unfettered access to the intellectual capital of world leaders and industry leaders and influencers
  7. It provides you with a platform to showcase samples of your work, and share your intellectual capital, thereby allowing you to be seen as an expert in your profession. This in turn increases the likelihood of your success in job hunting, as well as being offered career, academic and business opportunities by other professionals located across the world
  8. It has dedicated online learning, sales, and recruitment options
  9. It provides highly useful and value -adding functionality with its free option, which you can further enhance with a paid subscription
  10. Based on current business and lifestyle trends, and the influence of the internet on daily life, increasingly, if you do not have a professional online presence, through which interested parties e.g. Prospective Employers, Scholarship Donors, Venture Capitalists, Prospective Business Partners can research you, this will be seen as a ‘red flag.‘  Not having a well crafted, professional, online presence will make you un-competitive as a professional and entrepreneur who needs a thriving network in order to accomplish significant goals. With the growing dominance of LinkedIn in the professional, business and academic space, it is the first online context that anyone wishing to research you will visit.

Have we convinced you that if you are a career conscious professional or serious entrepreneur that you need to be ACTIVE on LinkedIn?

UTech Alumni, Can we help each other?

We’d like to think so.

But just to be sure, if you don’t mind us asking….

  • Would it help to boost your confidence, if you were sure you had a well crafted, value adding resume and/or LinkedIn Profile, which clearly and impressively answers the No. 1 question in a recruiter’s mind “What value will this candidate add to my organization?”
  • Would you feel more hopeful if you had someone to help you develop a job search or career management strategy so you could get on with your life…with better fit between who you are and what you do, plus better compensation-focus-joy-peace?
  • Would it mean a lot to you to be able to handle this…wait…period [wait to find a job, or wait to find a better job] without feeling fearful, angry, anxious and uncertain?

If You Answered “Yes!” to Any of the Questions

Then we can definitely help each other!

Congratulations Class of 2015

The Alumni Relations Office extends heartfelt congratulations to all of our graduates on the successful completion of your studies with us. We hope the following words and sentiments expressed in Edgar Albert Guest’s poem “It Couldn’t Be Done” will serve to inspire you to complete your life and career goals and achieve the quality life you desire and deserve.

It Couldn’t Be Done

Somebody said that it couldn’t be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That ‘maybe it couldn’t,’ but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it!

Somebody scoffed: ‘Oh, you’ll never do that;
At least no one ever has done it; ‘
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat
And the first thing we knew he’d begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
Without any doubting or quiddit,
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
There are thousands to prophesy failure,
There are thousands to point out to you one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing
That ‘cannot be done,’ and you’ll do it.

About the Alumni Relations Office

The Alumni Relations Office of the University of Technology, Jamaica (ARO) is a unit within the organizational structure of the University. You are an Alumnus (male), or Alumna (female), or member of the Alumni Community, based on the fact that you are a past student of our University. The aim of the Alumni Relations Office is to foster a good relationship between the University and all its past students.  We do this through programmes and services designed to:

  • Connect alumni with each other for networking benefits in favour of their ongoing personal, professional and business development
  • Connect alumni to the University to ensure that UTech remains a leader in national and regional development, with the assistance of alumni donations, volunteerism and advocacy
  • Connect alumni to the current student body, in order that our students can continue to be inspired by the achievements of graduates who too have experienced student life and have triumphed personally, professionally and academically

Our Alumni Stakeholders
Our past students connect with us in several ways, such as:

  •  As private citizens not attached to any Alumni Affiliate Group, but who wish to support the University or who want information e.g. transcripts, statements, how to establish scholarships, or event details
  • As Affiliate Alumni Groups which operate independently of the University, with their own executive and/or elected governing body, and membership fees, and which offer programmes, services, and events, to support the interests of their own members as well as the interests of UTech, Jamaica. These include:
    • The Alumni Association, UTech
    • The New York Metro Alumni Chapter
    • The CAST-UTech Alumni Chapter of South Florida
    • The Pharmacy Alumni Group
    • The Caribbean School of Architecture Alumni Group

Benefits of Maintaining Contact with UTech, Ja via the Alumni Relations Office

We serve past students and current students through the following methods and opportunities:

  • Email and Social Media updates on relevant alumni &/or UTech news, events or other information
  • Personal & Professional development workshops
  • Sharing Job Searching & Career Management Information
  • Career Consultations
  • Networking events
  • Social events
  • Volunteering opportunities
  • Referrals to job opportunities
  • Networking for jobs, projects & re-location
  • Research on University matters

Some services may attract a modest fee, which enables the Office to respond to the needs expressed by our students who face financial challenges as they too seek to complete their studies at UTech, Ja. In addition, we are called upon to support Alumni who may have urgent negative circumstances e.g. Needing a medical procedure.

Yes! I Want To Learn More about Being a Mentor @ UTech

As a Mentor, You Have the Wonderful, and Life Changing Opportunity to Draw On your Life Experiences, Failures and Triumphs to Guide and Encourage Students …

Who feel lonely, confused, completely overwhelmed

Who are at a crossroads, needing to make critical do-or-die decisions but don’t have the experience or information needed, or the confidence to just-make-the-decision and move on with life powerfully

The Career & Placement Unit & The Alumni Relations Office  are jointly seeking to recruit 150 new & returning mentors to UTech’s Annual Mentorship Programme.

Dear Alumni,

Below please find one of four (4) assignments that we share with you with full confidence that if completed, will significantly enhance your job search strategy. Completion of all four assignments will provide the following benefits:

  1. Clarity on your skill set that you have to offer the labour market – Will enable you to increase the variety of jobs you apply for.
  2. Clarity on the local &/or overseas labour market trends based on your analysis of job advertisements and financial news relevant to your job or industry of choice – Will help you verify the demand for your targeted job position; and verify if it is time to change fields, pursue higher education, change your job search strategy, or pursue an entrepreneurial venture.
  3. Clarity on how to use social media in your job search strategy – Will help you increase your job search strategies in a contemporary way – The more relevant strategies you incorporate inclusive of using information & communication technology, the greater your chances of attracting a job.
  4. Creation of 100 contact database to facilitate your networking strategy – Will help you be strategic in approaching persons to connect you to opportunities and circulate your resume.

==================================================================

ASSIGNMENT 1 of 4

What Do You Have To Offer?

Create Skills Inventory – A table of what you have to offer the world and your preferred work context i.e.

  • The skills and interests that motivate you (whether you are currently good at them or not, because you can always learn and improve)
  • The kinds of persons you wish to work with/serve
  • The environment you wish to work in (e.g. indoors vs. outdoors, with high interaction with people, with high interaction with machinery etc)
  • The salary you prefer based on your realities

Once you have identified the above, conduct research (online, subject matter experts, labour market/career news & information to determine what fields/job titles represent the characteristics you identified about yourself in all categories.)

*This is the most important exercise because it requires you to think critically about what you want and what you have to offer with regard to building your career. The skills inventory will expand your thinking about what jobs to pursue &/or what business to create or partner with, or what additional skills to learn in order to achieve your career goals.

NB: There are assessments online which can help you to efficiently and accurately do a skills inventory. (Do research and see also the UTech Alumni Relations Job Search-Career Online Resources Doc)
