RE: Invitation to Join the Mentorship Programme, UTech Jamaica AY 2019/20

Dear  Alumni and Friends of UTech, Jamaica,

Can you remember a time when you felt lonely, confused, completely overwhelmed?

Can you remember a time when you were at a crossroads, needing to make a critical do-or-die decision, but didn’t have the experience or information you needed, or the confidence to just-make-the-decision and move on with your life powerfully?

Can you remember a time when you just needed someone that you knew for sure was in your corner? Someone who had time for you…to listen, to understand, to encourage…to give you room to explore and fail without judgment, as well as to celebrate with you when you got it right?

At those times, I hope you had someone who offered you a safe space and support to work through these challenging life experiences, and be better, stronger, and wiser for it. (more…)

Prof. Stephen Vasciannie, President

What role does the University of Technology, Jamaica play in promoting economic growth in Jamaica? What is our mandate, and how do we go about delivering on that mandate? As the University approaches the end of its 60th year, it may be a good time to recall the University’s role in national life.

I am also prompted to offer the following observations because some commentators are apt to speak as if a University is a supermarket into which you may walk to purchase ready-made solutions for problems. They look at heavily-funded institutions with highly specialised facilities subsidised by industry in the metropole and assume that such institutions can be reproduced in Jamaica overnight, without a serious infusion of money. We believe that your perspectives will help educate the public on the great value of UTech, Jamaica’s contribution to Jamaica. The question is as follows:

Q: What is the value of UTech, Jamaica’s
Contribution to Jamaica?

UTech, Knights Have Your Say – What’s The Value of UTech, Jamaica’s Contribution to Jamaica | UTech, Jamaica Government Subvention Issue

Dear UTech, Knights and Friends,

In a letter to the editor of the Jamaica Observer, dated Monday 25th February, 2019 one Lipton Matthews wrote “UTech protest unwise” and made this reference Taxpayers could easily ask UTech to quantify its contribution to Jamaica, and if results show that the value created by the university is less than the input of taxpayers, then they will argue that UTech must receive less funding” (more…)
