More than a decade after he was abused by members of a police team, Anthony Taylor is trying his hardest to help change the image of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), and he is doing it from the inside.

Having joined the JCF three years ago, Taylor, now a constable, is providing a spark in Half-Way Tree, St Andrew.

His smiles, frequent handshakes and pleasant greetings brighten the morning for motorists and pedestrians in the heavily trafficked area near the transport centre.

“He is friendly, full o’ manners and he knows how to deal with people. Him a good police,” said Kemar Bennett, a vendor who operates close by the transport centre where Taylor is stationed.

OPEN LETTER TO UTECH GRADUATES

FYI UTech GRADS,

In his New York Times article “Growth in the ‘Gig Economy Fuels Workforce Anxieties” 12th July, 2015,  Noam Scheiber, discusses a number of relevant themes with regard to the changing nature of how ‘work’ is being defined. [See below] Sadly we in Jamaica (perhaps the wider Caribbean) don’t seem to have collated our own data to capture what is happening to us here. SOMETHING is happening. That SOMETHING is not good. Fit to Recruit Charity Flyer

Re: Request for Donations – “Fit” to Recruit Charity

Imagine being the first in your family to go to college, being away from home and somewhat maturing in a strange environment. Imagine being from a needy family, that has spent all they had to help you through your university days, and they have no more to give? Where would you go for help? What if you were from a family that “dressing up” was not a routine and you simply lack both the knowledge and the means to do so? If after spending four years in college
in a struggling economy a job opportunity presented itself, would you want to be dressed properly to make a strong first impression? Our final year male students would.

The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) will host its annual Career & Job Placement Fair on Friday, March 20, 2015 in the Alfred Sangster Auditorium under the theme “Advancing into the World of Work.” As one of the leading institutions in the region, we believe it is our responsibility to provide avenues for our students to interact with recruiters locally, regionally and internationally.

Approximately five hundred (500) students are expected to participate in this event and will interact with over eighty (80) recruiters. Over the years, there has been a growing need among our male student population for appropriate attire for employment interviews. We are seeking partners for our initiative to dress at least thirty (30) males with financial needs for their interviews during this recruiting event. Therefore, we invite you and/or your organization to join the “Fit” to Recruit Charity for 2015 and beyond.
