Dear New and Returning Students,

UTECH – Year 60: President’s Welcome

Welcome to our new students and welcome back to those who are returning to us.  I hope you have a wonderful new year, and that you meet your intellectual and other personal goals.

This is our 60th Anniversary Year.  Among the items we have lined up to mark the year are 60th Anniversary Distinguished Lectures.  We anticipate that our Chancellor, the Most Honourable Edward Seaga will deliver one of these lectures in September, on “The Origins and Development of Jamaican Music”.  We also anticipate Distinguished Lectures on Entrepreneurship (by Dr Henley Morgan), Engineering (by Professor Vernon Buchanan) and on Health Sciences (by Professor Fitzroy Henry), among others.

We also intend to host 60th Anniversary Concerts with popular entertainers, a special choir performance and a dramatic arts presentation.  The University also proposes to publish a coffee table book about “UTech at 60”, and to undertake various other special initiatives.

In addition, to mark our 60th year of operations, the University will launch a “60 @ 60 Scholarship Programme”.  Under this programme, we propose to award 60 scholarships each valued at J$100,000 to undergraduate students drawn from all Faculties and Colleges.  Details will be announced soon, but for now, it is important to note that each scholarship will be awarded for one year on the basis of academic performance in Semester 1, 2018 to 2019 (this semester).

Finally, I hope that you have worked through matters relating to registration, progression, obtaining ID cards and so on.  I also hope that Wi-Fi access is no longer a challenge, that students have access to administrative and other services up to 7 p.m., and that other facilities are improving.  I hope too that you will complete Student Evaluation forms at the appropriate time.

Students must be at the centre of our operations, in our 60th year and always.

Enjoy yourselves!

Stephen Vasciannie
