Dr. the Hon. Andrew Wheatley, MP, (right) Minister of Science, Energy and Technology presents a symbolic Universal Service Fund (USF) cheque valued at US$1,800 to Mr. Aygei Maters, (centre) 3rd year University of Technology, Jamaica School of Computing and Information Technology (SCIT) student who is also President, Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Student Branch, Jamaica Chapter. The USF donation was presented in support of the University’s participation at the annual IEEE Southeast Regional 3 Conference to be held in April 2018. Sharing in the presentation is Dr. Sean Thorpe, Head, SCIT.
The presentation was made on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at the offices of the Ministry in Kingston. The Universal Service Fund (USF) donation will support the UTech, Jamaica IEEE student hardware team to acquire electronic parts for their final designs of a new intelligent software controlled robot for the hardware competition. The prototype will be entered in the Hardware Competition at the annual Institute of IEEE Southeast Regional 3 Conference scheduled for April 19 – 22, 2018 in St Petersburg, Florida, USA where they will compete with other USA based universities.
Dr. the Hon. Andrew Wheatley, MP, Minister of Science, Energy and Technology in presenting the donation to the UTech, Jamaica team, opined that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an area of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) that need greater and deliberate emphasis within schools’ curriculum, given the ability of AI to be a game changer in our daily lives. Dr. Wheatley said that he was encouraged by UTech, Jamaica’s participation in this type of transformational STEM initiative and was happy that the USF could provide support to the students.
Dr Sean Thorpe, Head, School of Computing and Information Technology who was instrumental in lobbying for funding support for the students to complete their prototype, said that “the University is grateful to the USF for their show of support for the students to attend this year’s IEEE competition.” He noted that, “the financial aid is timely and will go a far way in assisting with the final incremental designs and programming of the live robot prototype.” Dr. Thorpe expressed appreciation to members of staff in both the School of Engineering and the School of Computing and Information Technology for their support in preparing the students for competition.
The 10 member UTech, Jamaica student delegation will be led by Mr. Aygei Masters who has been working assiduously to ready the hardware team for the upcoming IEEE competition. In addition to the Hardware competition, the UTech, Jamaica student team is also expected to participate in the Software Programming, T-Shirt Design, Website Design and Engineering Ethics competitions.
The annual IEEE Region 3 brings together Computer Scientists, Electrical and Computer Engineering professionals, faculty and students to share the latest information through technical sessions, tutorials, and exhibits. It is the most influential conference in Region 3 for promoting awareness of the technical contributions made by the profession to the advancement of engineering science and to the community.

I wanted to thank them for accepting the appointments and for serving Jamaica.
My administration is committed to charting a new course for Jamaica.
The new Integrity Commission, which is a merger of the Contractor General’s Department, the Integrity Commission and the Corruption Prevention Commission, must act as an example of the efficiency in stamping out corruption to make Jamaica the least corrupt place in the world.
The Commission must be a model agency for efficiency as wherever there is inefficiency there is corruption. The Commissioners must therefore ensure efficiency in their operations as it will be a catalyst to remove corruption.
