Ronald “Ronnie” Sutherland, Distinguished Past Student, 2017, UTech, Jamaica and General Manager, FYAH 105 FM

The Alumni Community of the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech, Ja) wishes to express heartfelt admiration and congratulations to Mr. Ronald “Ronnie” Sutherland, President, Alumni Association, UTech and General Manager, FYAH 105 FM, on being the recipient of the Distinguished Past Student Award, 2017, University of Technology, Jamaica.  The award was shared at the University’s 47th Annual Awards Ceremony, held Friday, May 26th, 2017 at the Papine Campus.

Below we share the citation read in honour of Ronnie, who has enjoyed a vibrant and robust career across multiple industries, and has served his Alma Mater, UTech Jamaica, commendably.

We continue to wish him much success in his personal and professional life, and look forward to experiencing his ongoing positive engagement with our University.


CITATION

Since leaving UTech, Ja., Ronald Sutherland has distinguished himself in a variety of industries inclusive of  broadcast media, manufacturing and sales and marketing. Mr. Sutherland received a Diploma in Engineering from CAST and later a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. Additional studies in Business and Management in the United Kingdom further equipped him for what would become his life’s work. The valuable experience gained by stints at CVM TV, Lasco Group of Companies, Jamaica Producers Group and the Seprod Groups, among others, has established him as an expert in areas of Strategic/Tactical Planning, Business and New Programme Development, Regulatory Compliance, Recruitment and Team Management. Through his expertise in these areas, he has made significant contribution to the social, political and economic life of Jamaica. He is currently the General Manager of S and B Communications Ltd. FYAH 105 FM, Jamaica’s latest radio station which currently ranks 6th of 32 radio stations.

Mr. Sutherland, a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and American Management Associations, has engendered a unique relationship with UTech, Ja. over the years.  An active member of the Alumni Association, he has been instrumental in expanding that Association through the establishment of overseas chapters and the Hall of Fame Award for alumni who have themselves performed with excellence in their respective spheres.  In addition, he conceptualized the Annual Alumni 5K Run with the goal of establishing a Centre of Excellence to offer academic and other support for students and staff of the University.

An ever-willing and valuable member of the UTech, Ja. family, his service has extended beyond the alumni to the wider university community. Over the years, he has provided representation on College and Faculty Boards helping to shape the development of relevant academic policies and curricula, and frequently assists the Human Resources Management Department as a member of the recruitment panel for senior posts.  He currently serves as President of the Alumni Association, Chairman of the Student Services Committee and as a member of the University’s Council.

The University seeks to create in every graduate – respect, integrity, innovativeness, team spirit, accountability and exemplary service to others. In Ronald Sutherland, it recognizes these attributes. The University applauds his academic excellence, outstanding community engagement and university service and takes great pleasure in recognizing him as this year’s recipient of the award for Distinguished Past Student.
