UTech Alumni, Can we help each other?

We’d like to think so.

But just to be sure, if you don’t mind us asking….

  • Would it help to boost your confidence, if you were sure you had a well crafted, value adding resume and/or LinkedIn Profile, which clearly and impressively answers the No. 1 question in a recruiter’s mind “What value will this candidate add to my organization?”
  • Would you feel more hopeful if you had someone to help you develop a job search or career management strategy so you could get on with your life…with better fit between who you are and what you do, plus better compensation-focus-joy-peace?
  • Would it mean a lot to you to be able to handle this…wait…period [wait to find a job, or wait to find a better job] without feeling fearful, angry, anxious and uncertain?

If You Answered “Yes!” to Any of the Questions

Then we can definitely help each other!

Dr. Kamilah Hylton, Dean, Faculty of Science and Sport has recently published a research article titled  “Should science departments have their own safety personnel? – An assessment of a centralized approach” in the highly regarded Journal of Chemical Health and Safety which is  an official peer-reviewed publication of the American Chemical Society Division of Chemical Health and Safety.  The article can be accessed online at http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1871553215001401. The abstract is below.

Abstract

In the United States, the OSHA regulation entitled “Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories” (29 CFR 1910.1450), requires the development of a “Chemical Hygiene Plan” which states how an organization will implement the requirements of the Laboratory Standard to provide a safe and healthy work environment for its employees. This implies a centralized system which takes into consideration specific needs of specialized departments. In Jamaica, there is no distinct regulation that focuses on university/academic laboratories. An assessment of a small university’s current safety plan reveals that it is geared towards the management of personal safety and disaster management and thus focuses solely on the treatment of fire, earthquake, bomb threats and hurricanes despite the fact that the university offers pure and applied sciences and consequently procures, utilizes and generates toxic chemicals and biological hazards. Consequently, laboratory safety is at the discretion of the users of the laboratory and therefore one wonders, that in the absence of a centralized system, should science departments have their own safety departments?
