Condolences on the Death of UTech, Ja. Student, Shanique Walters

The University of Technology, Jamaica community strongly condemns the brutal killing of one of our own, Miss Shanique Walters, first year Medical Technology student who was shot by robbers while walking home with another female student on Hope Boulevard in Hope Pastures, St. Andrew, last night, November 4.   The investigating police officers, with whom I met this morning, have given the assurance that every effort is being made to bring the perpetrators of this heinous murder to justice.

The University offers its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Miss Walters who are experiencing enormous grief at this time. The University’s Counselling Unit is leading a special grief counselling session with students in the College of Health Sciences this morning and will continue to offer support and comfort to the affected student body.

Discussions are being held at different levels at the University in partnership with the police and the University of the West Indies (UWI), to review measures to strengthen the safety and security of students.  These measures will be communicated in short order.

The challenge to safety and security of everyone in society at this time is recognized and I urge you to take extra precaution in guarding your personal safety and in being our brother’s keepers.

Prof. Colin Gyles

Acting President
