DEBATE & PUBLIC FORUM – REFERENDUM ON THE CCJ vs. THE UK PRIVY COUNCIL

In seeking to facilitate greater public awareness and engagement on whether, via referendum, the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) should be established as Jamaica’s final Court of Appeal, the Jamaican Association for Debating and Empowerment (JADE) Limited in partnership with the Faculty of Law, UTech will be hosting a national Quasi-British Parliamentary Debate and Public Forum. Please see event details below:

DATE: Thursday June 11, 2015

VENUE: Lecture Theatre 4 (LT4), University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) Papine Campus.

TIME: 5:00pm – 8:00pm

MOTION: “This House Believes that the CCJ should replace the UK Privy Council as Jamaica’s final Court of Appeal, without a Referendum”.

Immediately following the debate, there will be a public forum, further enabling a thorough examination of the issue. This debate and public forum will feature prominent political and thought leaders at the heart of the matter. We anticipate the attendance of a broad spectrum of public figures drawn from politics, academia and the legal fraternity.  Scheduled to participate are the Justice Minister, Senator the Hon. Mark Golding and the Attorney General Mr. Patrick Atkinson as well as senior functionaries within the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party.

The University community is invited to attend and participate in this important national discourse. For further information, kindly contact Mr Germaine Barrett via phone at 781-0630.
