The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech), led by Pro-Chancellor, Mr. Vivian Crawford, OD this morning welcomed  Ambassador the Hon. Burchell Whiteman, OJ,  who assumed duties today, Monday, June 2, 2014 as Acting President.

On his arrival, University Registrar, Dr. Elaine Wallace presented University Officers, Associate Vice Presidents, Deans and other members of Executive Management.

Ambassador Whiteman in his welcome remarks said “it is a privilege and pleasure to join this institution which has had a great past and has a great future ahead of it.”  He added that he trusts that we can all work together to preserve and protect the good name of our University in advancing the process of building a world class institution for the prosperity of Jamaica, as we move forward.

Hon. Burchell Whiteman, OJ has made an outstanding contribution as a Jamaican educator who as Minister of Education led the charge for the establishment of the University of Technology, Jamaica formerly College of Arts, Science and Technology (CAST).

Hon. Burchell Whiteman, OJ who has served in the House of Representatives for a number of years, is currently a member of the Advisory Team, Office of the Prime Minister. Between 2007 and 2009, he served as the High Commissioner of Jamaica to the United Kingdom and Ambassador to Spain, Portugal, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark.  He is also the founding principal for Brown’s Town Community College. Senator Whiteman has received the Order of Jamaica (OJ) for outstanding contribution to Education and the Legislature.

He is seen as one of the most respected and admired politicians, seen as an elder statesman for his intellectual rigour, diplomatic demeanour and honesty, even when confronted with failures of the administration and its policies. In 1975, he left York Castle as principal to become the founding principal of the Brown’s Town Community College (BTCC), an experiment in tertiary education that took off. Today, BTCC is one of the largest institutions on the north coast with several campuses.  From BTCC, he ventured into representational politics.

On November 2, 2013, UTech conferred the Honorary Doctorate of Laws, Honris Causa  on Ambassador Whiteman for his outstanding contribution to Jamaica.
