I. Background and Overview

The global sports industry is projected to grow at a rate of 4% per year through to 2014. Yet despite Jamaica’s dominance in recent world championship events, the majority of Jamaican athletes have not been able to benefit economically from the rise in performance standard and popularity. This is due to an ineffective sports industry that is based on amateur operational practices used by most of the current sports clubs.
The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) has developed a successful sports program in partnership with the Maximum Velocity and Power (MVP) Track Club which seeks to invest in high potential athletes leaving the school sport system. The approach focuses on training and grooming talented young athletes, providing financial support for their education, health and physical development. Building on this successful model, the Sport Entrepreneurship Project (SEP) will pilot entrepreneurship for youth at risk in Jamaica, developing an innovative and comprehensive model for alternative professional engagement that leverages the competitive advantage abundant amongst economically disadvantaged demographics.
II. Main Objective of the Project Manager/Coordinator
To successfully manage a project to create a sustainable sports business model that can engage youth at risk in poor inner-city and rural communities in Jamaica, in line with the project timelines and budget.
