The School of Computing and Information Technology (SCIT), University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) in partnership with the UTech Western Campus successfully launched and conducted an inaugural Post Graduate Certificate training programme, with the module “Information Systems Security and Audit” from May 14 – 16, 2014. The programme was conducted at the UTech Dome Street campus, Montego Bay.

The short course explored several security vulnerabilities that impact local business by examining hands on laboratories in Ethical Hacking to determine the vulnerabilities and adaptable counter-measures as an audit requirement for the business.   Dr. Sean Thorpe, Programme Director, Graduate Studies, SCIT noted that, “as the scourge of white collar digital crime becomes pervasive, the need for this type of training becomes not only urgent but critical for law enforcement as well as corporate investigations.”  The training and organizing team was led by Dr. Thorpe and Mr. Kedrian James, Lecturer, SCIT.   Participants included a cross section of IT staff from UTech as well as personnel from other established organizations in western Jamaica who have a direct responsibility for corporate IT security.

This course marks the introduction of the SCIT Post-Graduate modular training programme at the Western campus. The course presented is the first of four modules within the Master of Information Systems Management (ISM) – Security Specialization. The specialization modules covered are Information Security and Audit, IT Security Project Risk, IT Security Incident Response and Digital Forensics and IT Security Governance.  Successful completion of the four (4) modules allows the students to exit the programme with the Post Graduate Certificate in Enterprise Information Security as industry practitioners.

Security and Audit Courses for Papine campus

In response to the positive feedback on the course from the Dome Street campus, the Information Security and Audit course will also be offered at the UTech Papine campus from May 29-31, 2014.  Additional short summer courses are also now being considered for the prescribed module.
