OVERVIEW

UTech BUSINESS, STUDY & CULTURE TOUR TO CHINA

BACKGROUND

UTech will be leading a Business, Study & Cultural Tour to China during period May to June 2014, in collaboration with our partner institution, Sias International University, which was recognized in 1998 as the first university in China to offer an American bachelor’s degree and was approved by the Chinese government to fly both the American and Chinese flags. The Business, Study & Cultural Tour to China was initiated following the International Association of University Presidents’ (IAUP) meeting in Beijing in September 2013, when University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Sias International University (Sias) and other Chinese Universities. Pursuant to the UTech/Sias MOU, Prof. Rosalea Hamilton engaged discussions with Jinjin Chu, Dean, School of Chinese Language and Culture and Prof. Linda Fraser Jacobsen, Provost, at Sias, which led to the organization of a Business, Study & Cultural Tour to China specially designed for the participants from Jamaica.

OBJECTIVE

To provide participants with the opportunity to gain first-hand business, educational and cultural experience in China.

 

PARTICIPANTS

Business persons, academics/cultural/professionals/ persons and university students.

 

PROPOSED ACTIVITIES

  1. Short Orientation Seminars at UTech led by representatives from the Chinese Embassy in the following:
    • Chinese Language
    • Chinese Culture
    • Chinese History
    • Doing Business in China
  2. Tours of major cities in China, such as Beijing, Henan, Xi’an and Shanghai
  3. Meetings and networking events to be arranged based on business/professional interests and may include one-on-one meetings with Chinese business leaders, Presidents/officials from tertiary institutions from Asia and the Pacific
  4. Participation in the official 15th anniversary festivities at Sias that will take place on May 31st, 2014. These celebrations will include: an International Women’s Conference, an Anniversary Parade of student floats and marching bands, spectacular performances by our symphony and opera company, a conference welcoming University Presidents and officials from throughout the Asian Pacific region, sporting events, homecoming celebrations, graduation ceremonies, celebratory banquets, tours to historic sites, ceremonies acknowledging the contributions of many long-time Sias friends and the Sias Foundation Board Members, distinguished partners, faculty members, alumni and much more.

TIMEFRAME

  • Orientation Seminars at UTech: during the period May 5 to 22 (to be confirmed)
  • Travel dates: May 26 to June 16, 2014

COST

It is estimated that the overall cost of the tour PER PERSON would be approximately USD4,900, depending on the cities visited and the business/networking meetings arranged. The cost will include airfare, domestic transportation, study at SIAS, dorm at international student dorm hall, excursions transportation, accommodation, admission fee and meals.
